Winners and Losers Of the Group Stage Draw

As expected, there is plenty of drama and talking points across the 8 different groups with England placed with the United States, Argentina meeting Mexico, Germany getting Spain and Portugal in a group with Uruguay and Ghana.

Here are some of the winners and losers of the group stage draw:

Winners

The winner of the draw is determined by the allocation of the teams in the group. It comprises the team with easy group draw and are favorites to advance on the further stage.

England

The 1966 World Cup winner England reached the semi final in the previous competition and are favorites to qualify from Group B. The group comprises Asian powerhouse Iran who have never made it pass out of the group stages in their previous 5 attempts.

Another team in the group is the United States, who shocked England at the 1950 World Cup. They have a talented and young squad but despite their strong lineup they have only booked their place in Qatar on goal difference ahead of Costa Rica after losing their final qualifier match.

The third team in the group will be either Ukraine, Scotland or Wales after the conclusion of the UEFA Play Off Qualifier.

France

In an attempt to avoid the defending champion curse (with the defending champions of previous 3 tournaments failing to get past the group stage in 4 of the last 5 World Cup), France have a strong chance of making it to the knockout stage.

They avoided the European heavyweights but will face a tricky challenge against Denmark winning 9 out of 10 games placed in the qualifier with only 3 goals conceded. The interesting fact about Denmark is that they had conceded all 3 goals and lost the match only after securing the qualification.

Other teams in the tournament will be tournament minnows Tunisia and the winner of Inter Confederation Play Off between United Arab Emirates, Peru and Australia.

Belgium

This could be probably the last opportunity of the golden generation of Belgium team to win a major trophy. Their stars players Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard will be over 33 years when the next European Championship kicks off. So, it is now or never for them. Other teams in the group comprises Canada, Morocco and 2018 World Cup Runner Up Croatia which are most likely to progress to the knockout stage given the group they are drawn.

Losers

Qatar

We can assume the biggest loser of the World Cup draw is the host nation Qatar itself. Qualifying for the tournament for the 1st time, the host nation is drawn against South American nation Ecuador, reigning African Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion Senegal and 2010 World Cup Finalist Netherlands. Looking at the draw it looks like Qatar are mostly likely to be only the 2nd host nation to be eliminated from the group stage of the tournament itself.

GERMANY

2014 World Cup winner Germany are another team drawn in a tougher group in the tournament. Their group comprises 2010 winner Spain who has an edge over them in major tournaments. In the recent meetings Spain has beaten Germany by an identical 1-0 scoreline in Euro 2008 final and World Cup 2010 semi final alongside 6-0 thrashing in the UEFA Nation League.

Other teams in the group include Asian powerhouse Japan and Winner of the Inter Confederation Play Off match between Costa Rica and New Zealand.

Portugal

Portugal is another team drawn in a tougher group. The group comprises the 2 time World Cup winners Uruguay – the team that knocked them out in the tournament’s previous edition, African nation Ghana and the Asian powerhouse South Korea. It will be a tough battle for Cristiano Ronaldo and co to qualify to the Round of 16.

The bottom line:

So, these are the teams that are drawn for the FIFA World Cup 2022. Still there are 3 teams yet to qualify for the tournament. We shall update the group with the final teams once the play-off round is completed in June.
